Team Manila is slowly regaining its footing as it stopped Victorious Secret’s streak 3-2.
Both teams were wrestling to set the pace all throughout the game, despite being interrupted by lots of calls and outside balls. Team Manila’s forwards were marked doubly early on, while the Victorious Secret offensives were stopped short by the center and defensive backbone Luis Manila.
An early goal by Juianne de Villa, assisted by Paolo Rentero, was an interrupted boon to Team Manila, being counted as a high stick. Despite the alerted Victorious Secret tighter guard, Rentero’s slap shot went right through three defenders and was delivered into the goal by De Jesus, three minutes before the end of the period.
The Victorious Secret spirits were not the least dismayed, however, and maintained their tight mark on the Manila offense. One minute into the second period, Magno slipped and accidentally performed a lying play as he continued to try and chase the ball. Victorious Secret was unable to take advantage of this, as Team Manila held their ground (even making shot attempts) until they were no longer short-handed. But the Victorious forwards are not lacking in enthusiasm either despite the heavily felt absence of Bullet Ribaya. Jesus Apa, assisted by Joshua Paunil scored a point blank shot through Team Manila’s keeper, tying the game at 1-1.
Both teams continued to wrestle for ball control, while their shot attempts proved futile until the last ten minutes of the game. Rentero time took a goal for himself, this time assisted by De Jesus. Apa again ties the game at with 2 minutes remaining, but Manila steps in and launches the winning shot at the last 50 seconds. The Victorious Secret finally gave up, knowing that Team Manila was merely stalling for time.
Both team’s main goalkeepers were absent, and were substituted by each team’s big men: Daniel Bonifacio for the Victorious Secrets and Sid San Pedro for Team Manila. San Pedro saved 12 out of 14, while Bonifacio saved 13 out of 16.
