On the 26th of July 2012, Floorball Philippines (FP), represented by Ralph Ramos and Ryan Elizaga, visited the Immaculate Conception Academy (ICA), an exclusive Catholic school for girls located in Greenhills, San Juan City. FP conducted a Floorball demonstration introducing the sport to its Sports club class, facilitated by Ms. Amanda Isada, PE instructor in ICA. This is the second-time Floorball Philippines demonstrated Floorball to an all-girls school, first was in Assumption College High School, Makati in 2011. The High school students, from different year levels, were very happy and energetic. The students were very curious and interested as the sport was being introduced to them judging by the reaction on their faces while looking at the floorball equipment. The students were all seemed excited to start the drills and exercises. The demonstration started with proper stick handling and stance, immediately followed by ball dribbling, shooting, and passing. After the drills, the girls were challenged to a mini Floorball tournament where they applied all the skills they learned during the session. It was evident that the students from ICA really enjoyed the Floorball demonstration based on their active participation and energy all throughout the demo especially in the mini-tournament. Overall, the Floorball demonstration was indeed a success. It was another memorable experience for Floorball Philippines to share the sport to the Filipino youth. ICA is one of the first schools introduced to Floorball in Metro Manila, including Ateneo De Manila High School and Colegio San Agustin, Makati. Floorball Philippines hopes that the students of ICA will share to their friends how much they enjoyed this new and unique sport. Ultimately, FP looks forward to Floorball being included in ICA’s Sports Club program. The Level 1 coaching course was held last July 5 to 8, 2012 at the Valhall Floorball Academy in Singapore. The 3-day Floorball coaching course was facilitated by Filip and Stefan Dahlgren, the Swede brothers who introduced Floorball in Singapore in the 90’s. The course covered the basic technical skills in Floorball, from proper stick handling and dribbling to shooting and passing. In addition, basic tactical strategies such as playing system, defensive transition, and offensive transition were introduced in the course. The Level 1 course also discussed modern approaches in Floorball coaching including sport pedagogy, planning and programming, strength and conditioning, functional training, etc. The course provided a lot of theoretical and practical information in teaching and coaching Floorball, which are very easy to understand for beginner level players. Common problems and issues in Floorball coaching (i.e., handling youth teams, incorrect handling of stick, etc.) were also addressed and explained. The coaching course opens up a great opportunity to propagate the sport in the Philippines in the correct way, with a good foundation for the development of local Floorball players. In view of one of the mid-term goals of Floorball Philippines, the implementation of the Level 1 coaching course in the country’s floorball development is a good start in achieving its aim to participate in the 2015 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore. Floorball Philippines also looks forward to players with good foundational skills as the course is applied in the national program. The Singapore Floorball Association (SFA) will be organizing the NCAP Level 1 (Technical) Floorball Coaching Course on the 5th to 8th July 2012 at the Valhall Academy in Singapore. The coaching course is open to interested participants from local clubs and teams of Floorball Philippines. For more details, please check out the SFA website or contact Ralph Ramos at (+632) 348-2067. The International Floorball Federation (IFF) has continually supported Floorball development in the Philippines by sending 400 sticks and 1000 balls last month. Floorball Philippines, in cooperation with the IFF, continues to propagate Floorball to the different regions in the country by launching its long-term project that will introduce the sport to key schools and institutions in the country. The project aims to include Floorball in the Physical education (P.E.), co-curricular club, or after-school programs of at least 100 schools nationwide. The organization will be donating sticks and balls to deserving and willing public and private schools in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Floorball Philippines will also be conducting free Basic Floorball seminars for P.E. teachers or coaches to equip them to teach the sport to their students. This project will hopefully increase awareness of the sport and also rapidly multiply the number of players to choose from to make us highly competitive for the SEA games in 2015 in Singapore. Among the schools that will be recipients of the equipment are Ateneo de Manila High School (P.E. program), Colegio de San Agustin Makati (grade shool co-curricular sport club), Davao Christian School (after-school program) and possibly De La Salle Santiago-Zobel School (P.E. or co-curricular club). Interested schools or other institutions (i.e., NGO, company, church, etc.) who would like to start Floorball and to be recipients of donated sticks and balls may contact Floorball Philippines here. The Internation Floorball Federation (IFF) reports about the development of floorball in the Philippines as the sport was introduced to different schools in Metro Manila and in Davao City. Please visit the IFF website for the details of the report. (click here) Floorball Philippines conducted a two-day Floorball development seminar among faculty members of the Ateneo de Manila High School (HS) P.E. department. The seminar was held on May 17 and 21 at the Ateneo HS covered courts. The two-day seminar was participated by five (5) HS P.E. instructors of the Ateneo with the assistance of the UP Floorball Club. The seminar was designed to teach the necessary basic floorball skills including passing and receiving, shooting, dribbling, rules, gameplay, etc. Floorball was first introduced to Ateneo back in 2000 when a Swede group demonstrated the sport and donated Floorball sticks and balls to the university. Thus, making Ateneo the first institution to be introduced to Floorball in the country. However, due to the lack of training and program, the Ateneo was not able to develop the sport since then. Floorball Philippines is honored to be able to help them "re-"start Floorball in their university. Floorball is expected to be included in the 2nd term of the 3rd and 4th year HS P.E. program. The organization looks forward to the promotion and development of Floorball in one of the most prestigious universities in the country. The 1st General Assembly of Floorball Philippines was held on the 14th of May in Quezon City with observer participants from the Lagro Floorball, University of Makati Floorball, and the University of the Philippines (UP) Floorball Club.
The term of office of the Trustees and Officers was extended from 1 year to 3 years to provide sufficient time for elected officers to effectively adapt and manage the organization during their term. Mr. Ryan Elizaga was re-elected as the President of Floorball Philippines in 2012-2015. Ralph Ramos and Mon Casuga were also re-elected as Secretary general and Treasurer, respectively. Mr. Renato Bravo of Bacolod was elected as Vice-president replacing the late Arsenio Tado. For the first time a floorball tournament, with a division between male and female players, was organized. 5 teams and 4 teams participated in the men's and women's division, respectively. Two teams from each division were college students enrolled in the Floorball Physical Education (P.E.) summer class in UP Diliman. The first day of the Challenge was historical for Philippine Floorball as the first-ever official women's floorball match was held during that day. The UP Floorball Club Men's team dominated the Challenge winning all their 4 matches, with a 5-1 victory against their rival University of Makati (UMak) Floorball team. On the other hand, the UMAK women's floorball team reign champions in the women's division of the 2nd Floorball Summer Challenge with a 3-0 record (5-0, 5-1, 5-1). Another historical event took place on the last day of the Challenge when the official IFF rink and goals were used in the remaining matches of the tournament. The International Floorball Federation (IFF) has leased a rink and goals to Floorball Philippines for 2-years. Floorball Philippines is very grateful to IFF for the support on floorball development in the country. With the official rink and goals, Floorball Philippines is planning to organize the Philippine Floorball League (Manila leg) in July. The organization is also looking forward to hold the first Philippine Floorball Championships in Bacolod City next year 2013. |
